Current Role
Ecologist and biogeochemist focused on understanding the interactions between plants, soil, and microbes at the ecosystem scale, and the effects of human factors, such as land use, and global climate change on these interactions.
Capabilities
Application of ecological and micrometeorological techniques such as eddy covariance, field chronosequences (space for time substitution), manipulative climate change experiments, field and laboratory experiments, mid-infrared spectroscopy, and stable isotope integrators to different biomes including wetlands, forests, grasslands, cropping systems, and arctic tundra.
Career Highlights
  • Co-Principal Investigator: Scientific Focus Area “Soil Carbon Responses to Environmental Change” of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Science group, sponsored by the DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research. Characterization and mapping of tundra soil organic carbon stocks in the Arctic and predicting the vulnerability of soil carbon to decomposition in this region.
  • Co-Principal Investigator: “Climate Adaptation and Sustainability in Switchgrass: Exploring Plant-Microbe-Soil Interactions across Continental Scale Environmental Gradients” for the Genomic Science Program, Systems Biology for Energy and Environment. Includes research on coupled plant growth and physiological measurements with measurements of key carbon pools and fluxes to integrate carbon dynamics across temporal and spatial scales.
  • Argonne Principal Investigator: Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The Ray for Roots project is developing a new x-ray backscatter instrument for visualization and measurement of intact roots in soil. Also, Principal Investigator for Signals in the Soil (SitS) projects, in partnership with the National Science Foundation, to develop new sensors for detecting changes in soil moisture.
